The Newsroom.
The last great TV series in post-modern era, (I don't know why I said those last two words...maybe because I did not want to limit the definition of great without alienating period series and oh yeah, even the reality tv shows), was The West Wing.
Yes, there were great, exciting, and even exhilarating shows along the way such as Six Feet Under or Battlestar Gallactica. They are amazing shows, don't get me wrong.
But there's something about Sorkin's creations that puts me in a different world, away from mine. Issues after issues, mostly not even relevant to me nor my country. And they are damn interesting and riveting that you'd want to get to the bottom of it.
I did not watch The West Wing because of a keen interest on the issues that surround the White House or the US government but I watched it because, well aside from how funny they shaped the character of CJ, its mostly because of the way it was written. Everyone seemed intelligent. Every word, every rebuttal, every reply seemed witty. And I liked that. I want to have conversations like that in my world.
Each character is unique. Each has its own quirks. You hate some, you love some. And that's another thing. You don't get that kind of realism in most shows. The West Wing and the The Newsroom -- the scenarios seem real that I sometimes can't imagine them being just in a studio with cameras and crew around them. They always feel real.
That is what Sorkin's doing again in The Newsroom. I just started watching, have seen a few episodes and I can already see a stark resemblance in the structure of the screenplay. Suffice it to say, even in the few episodes I've seen, I've enjoyed watching it.
Even in the execution of its starting credits. The music? Very heralding, a lot like The West Wing. That's why I'm loving it.
Sorkin is just a creature of genius. Who could forget the scene in A Few Good Men when Tom Cruise and Nicholas Cage were on a shouting match about the truth? Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip had a great potential. The Social Network, The Moneyball. Need I say more?
So, there. Just wanted to say my piece. And the newly downloaded episode has just finished.
I will now go back to watching the news.
